Plant profile
Katsura trees, native to Japan and China, are known for their charming foliage. As the heart-shaped leaves turn to shades of amber in autumn, they release a sweet, candy-like smell.
This pleasant smell is referenced in the Japanese name (桂), and in the tree’s other common names, including caramel tree, cotton candy tree, and in Germany, kuchenbaum, or cake tree.
This is a social tree that wants to draw others in. As an essence, katsura opens us up to possibility and to community after a period of loss, helping us to shed fears held over from the past.
